Clinical Support Technician Service

This service is available to patients who have technical problems with their prosthesis, and it can allow the patient to be seen in clinic sooner. However, if the problem is related to socket fit/comfort, alignment or prescription the patient needs to make an appointment with their Prosthetist.

06.10.11: Vets Plate Champion

Prior to the loss of my lower left leg in my late teens (through knee amputation) I was very active, playing basketball at club and county level, participating in athletics at county level and keen on hill walking and climbing. I didn't see the loss of my leg as an impediment to continuing to be active and on discharge from hospital immediately got back to hill walking on my temporary ‘pylon'. I haven't played basketball or competed in athletics since then, but have taken up other sports and now am a keen sportsman playing racquet games (mainly squash but also tennis and badminton over the years) and going mountaineering and skiing. I also go running and swimming for fitness (although I don't wear a limb for the latter - except when I fell out of a boat!). The only downside to all this activity is the amount of wear and tear the prosthesis suffers. I recently won the veterans plate competition (against able bodied over 45 opponents) at my local squash club and the picture shows me holding the trophy.

10.02.11: Welcome to the team

Laura Wigglesworth has recently joined the clinical team in Cambridge. Laura graduated from the University of Strathclyde in November 2010 and is very happy to join the opcare team at Addenbrooke's Rehabilitation Clinic to dual practice in prosthetics and orthotics. Laura would like to say, "the team has been very welcoming and I look forward to developing as a clinician, improving my knowledge on different clinical conditions and advancing my problem solving skills."

Centre Information

Addenbrooke's entrance

The opcare clinical team in Cambridge is made up of 3 Orthotists, 2 Prosthetists and 2 dual practising Prosthetists/Orthotists, supported by 2 administrators and 6 technicians (including 1 clinical support technician). We are based in the outpatients department of Addenbrooke's Hospital. The service within Addenbrooke's is provided in partnership with our NHS colleagues. The multidisciplinary team includes physiotherapy, occupational therapy, a rehabilitation consultant and a nurse who can also provide counselling.

The centre runs Prosthetic and Orthotic clinics in Addenbrooke's, a satellite prosthetic clinic in Peterborough District Hospital on a weekly basis and an orthotic clinic at the Princes of Wales Hospital, Ely once a fortnight.

The prosthetic service is used by approximately 1,000 patients from the surrounding area, covering upper and lower limb loss at all levels. The orthotic service cares for a wide range of patients, it runs clinics within the department and also contributes to multidisciplinary teams throughout the hospital. This includes a paediatric clinic, diabetic foot clinic, scoliosis clinic, neuro rehabiliation, and a foot and ankle clinic with the orthopaedic team.
